International Conference on Climate Change and Water Security (ICCWS-2015)
Addressing the current context of climate change and its adverse impacts on natural resources especially on water resources, Department of Environmental, Water Resources, and Coastal Engineering (EWCE), MIST coupled with Climate Lab Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP), of Civil Engineering (CE) organized an “International Conference on Climate Change and Water Security” (ICCWS – 2015) on 27 December, 2015 at MIST.
Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) was the chief guest and Dr. Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, BRAC University was the special guest in the conference. Other distinguished guests of the occasion were Maj Gen Abu Sayeed Md Masud, CCO Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project; Prof. M. Feroze Ahmed, Vice Chancellor, Stamford University; and Dr A. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies.
Keynote speakers of the conference were Professor Dr. AL. Ramanathan, School of Environmental Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University,India; Dr. Md. SaifurRahman, Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Concordia University, Canada and Professor M Taher Saif, Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
A panel discussion session was presided by Engr. Malik FidaA Khan, Deputy Executive Director, CEGIS, where the distinguished speakers highlighted on the importance of climate and water security issues.
A total of 58 abstracts focusing on climate change modeling, climate variability and food/water security, salt water intrusion, sea level rise and impact in coastal area, adaptation to climate change, disaster management, application of GIS and RS for climatic vulnerability assessment, rainwater harvesting in water stressed area, climate change and health risk, landscape and water resources in changing environment, climatology and urban hydrology and other current environmental issues have been received from scientists working in different universities, institutes, Govt. offices located in home and abroad namely Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, Concordia University, Canada, ITB – Brunei, University ofWollongong, Australia, BUET, IWFM, ITN-BUET, DU, DUET,MIST, SUST, AUST, UAP, NSU, BRAC University, UITS, PU, MoFDM, PWD, DWASA, SPARRSO, BIWTA, BMD, Barisal City Corporation,WaterAid, BCAS, CEGIS, IWM, Idyllic Design and NGO Forum.
Following the keynote session, two parallel technical sessions in three time slots were held, where a significant number of research papers were presented by the authors. Besides, a poster session was also held.
